Bungoma, Kenya Farm Region – OPEN Integrates Seeed Sensor Network for Regenerative Research Experiments with the Bungoma Ministry of Agriculture at ATC
In Bungoma, Kenya, a transformative experiment in regenerative agriculture is underway, addressing challenges posed by traditional farming. One Planet Education Network (OPEN) and Mabanga Agriculture Training Center (ATC) are pioneering data-driven precision farming using IoT devices. Limited internet access and high data costs in Africa hinder technology adoption, but OPEN introduces a LoRaWAN-based solution, enabling wireless connectivity at a low cost. Sensors collect vital data on air temperature, air humidity, soil temperature, moisture, electrical conductivity (EC), light intensity, and CO2 levels. This data is transmitted to the cloud for analysis. The initiative aims to enhance crop yields, improve soil fertility, combat drought, and promote eco-friendly farming, contributing to sustainable agriculture in the region. As a result of OPEN’s regenerative farming practices in Bungoma, Kenya, and local support, farms have shown exceptional results, restoring soil health and promoting sustainable, eco-friendly agriculture.
