STUDENTS GROWING FOOD DURING TIME OF WAR

December 2025

Our Jamaica agriculture technology partners surviving and then quickly recovering from a Category – 5 Plus hurricane was an amazing story of disaster preparedness and resilience (read about it on the OPEN homepage).

Students continuing with our lessons in sustainable farming during an occupation by rebel forces in the Eastern Democratic Republic of The Congo (DRC) is yet another incredible story of perseverance, bravery, and mindfulness.

While we want to tell their story in more detail, it is important that we keep their confidence. So we just want to show in pictures our students there carrying on with their lives and doing well despite the difficult circumstances.

Life goes on in DRC, Ukraine, Gaza, Myanmar, the Sudan, and many other places in the world under such threats. So OPEN honors the children and their teachers one all, and where we can, support the cause of food security in the face of such dangers and great uncertainty. We salute you all.

Included here are recent pictures of the students planting an intercrop of maize and bush beans, and now at the very end of the year a wide variety of fruit trees, such plum, lemon, orange, and avocado trees. The goal:

  • To counter damaging climate change impacts and capture more CO2 locally
  • To help prevent malnutrition by the planting of these nutritionally important fruits to offer students and their community
